CATEGORY ACTRESS IN A LEADING ROLE : ISABELLE HUPPERT

After winning a Golden Globe for best actress in a dramatic film and numerous awards around the world, Isabelle Huppert is now in the running for the Best Actress Oscar for her performance in Paul Verhoeven’s film Elle. This is the first Academy Award nomination for Isabelle Huppert. If she wins, she will become the fourth French actress to get the statuette in this category after Claudette Colbert in 1935, Simone Signoret in 1960 and Marion Cotillard in 2008.

FILM SYNOPSIS

As Michèle, Isabelle Huppert plays a successful CEO who refuses to go to the police when she is raped, instead resolving to find the culprit on her own.

CATEGORIES DIRECTING AND WRITING (ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY) : DAMIEN CHAZELLE

French-American director and screenwriter Damien Chazelle and his musical La La Land, received 14 nominations, including Best Director and Best Original Screenplay. Damien Chazelle has already been nominated in the category Writing (Adapted) in 2015 for his previous film Whiplash.

FILM SYNOPSIS

Aspiring actress Mia and jazz pianist Sebastian struggle to realize their dreams in Los Angeles despite the often soul-crushing commercial nature of show business. As they endure rejection and forge unexpected paths to stardom, the young couple also strives to sustain the love they were surprised to find.

CATEGORY FOREIGN LANGUAGE FILM : THE SALESMAN (Iran)

The Iranian film by Asghar Farhadi, The Salesman is a French co-production (Memento Films, and sold by Memento Films International). The film is in the running for best foreign language film.

FILM SYNOPSIS

After Iranian couple Emad and Rana are forced to move to a new apartment, their life together is thrown into turmoil by an act of violence. They decide not to report the incident, and Rana’s emotional withdrawal becomes more than Emad can bear. He begins his own investigation and is overcome by an increasing need for revenge.

CATEGORY ANIMATED FEATURE FILM : MY LIFE AS A ZUCCHINI AND THE RED TURTLE

Two animated films produced or co-produced by France has been selected for the Oscars 2017 : My life as a zucchini by Claude Barras (sold by Indie Sales) and The red turtle by Michael Dudok de Wit (sold by Wild Bunch).

MY LIFE AS A ZUCCHINI - Claude Barras and Max Karli

The French-Swiss stop motion animated film directed by Claude Barras was hand-crafted in the Rhône-Alpes region and produced in the studios of the Pôle Pixel in Villeurbanne. These are the first Academy Award nominations for Claude Barras and Max Karli.

FILM SYNOPSIS

After the death of his alcoholic mother, nine-year-old Zucchini moves into a group foster home. Much to his surprise, Zucchini begins to make friends with the other children, who have had similarly difficult lives. As he matures and wrestles with feelings about his complicated past, Zucchini gains the confidence to shape his future.

THE RED TURTLE - Michael Dudok de Wit and Toshio Suzuki

“The Red Turtle” was co-created by the German Wild Bunch studio, French Why Not Productions and Japanese Studio Ghibli. This is the third Academy Award nomination for Michael Dudok de Wit. He was previously nominated for: FATHER AND DAUGHTER (2000) Winner, Short Film (Animated) and THE MONK AND THE FISH (1994)

FILM SYNOPSIS

A sailor stranded on a deserted island builds a series of rafts as he attempts to return home, but each voyage is thwarted by a giant sea turtle with a red shell. After the turtle mysteriously transforms, the sailor learns to appreciate the beauty of an ordinary life lived in tune with nature’s rhythms.

CATEGORY VISUAL EFFECTS : STEPHANE CERETTI (DOCTOR STRANGE)

French visual effects supervisor Stephane Ceretti is nominated with Richard Bluff, Vincent Cirelli and Paul Corbould for the film Doctor Strange.

FILM SYNOPSIS

Arrogant neurosurgeon Stephen Strange feels that he has lost his purpose in life when a car accident causes nerve damage to his hands. He travels from New York to Kathmandu, where he seeks help from a mystic who trains him to become a sorcerer who can protect the world from magical threats.


CATEGORIY DOCUMENTARY (FEATURE) : I AM NOT YOUR NEGRO

Raoul Peck is nominated for his James Baldwin documentary I Am Not Your Negro.

FILM SYNOPSIS

In 1979, author James Baldwin wrote a 30-page letter outlining a biography of slain civil rights leaders Medgar Evers, Malcolm X and Martin Luther King, Jr. Although Baldwin’s proposed manuscript was never completed, his letter and other writings serve as fuel for an examination of race relations in America.

CATEGORY SHORT FILM (LIVE ACTION) : ENNEMIS INTERIEURS

Ennemis intérieurs is nominated for best short film (live action). This is the first Academy Award nomination for Sélim Azzazi.

FILM SYNOPSIS

In the 1990s, as the Algerian civil war rages and terrorists infiltrate France, a French police officer of Algerian descent conducts a rancorous interview with a French-born Algerian man seeking naturalization.

CATEGORY COSTUME DESIGN : MADELINE FONTAINE

Madeline Fontaine is nominated in the Best Costume Design category for the film Jackie (Jackie is a beneficiary of France’s Tax Rebate.) This is the first Academy Award nomination for Madeline Fontaine.

FILM SYNOPSIS

After her husband is assassinated in Dallas in 1963, Jacqueline Kennedy strives to maintain a public show of strength while grieving in private and caring for their two young children. As she searches for the best way to ensure both her husband’s and her own legacies, Jackie navigates the treacherous waters of politics.
